The New Standard for Vacuum Insulated CO2 Storage Systems

HARRY R. WATERS

Many considerations should be made when purchasing a vacuum insulated storage unit for carbon dioxide service. It is important to realize the differences in CO2 applications requirements and those of cryogenic gases. Most all CO2 applications require heat entry into the storage unit to replace the BTU's removed when withdrawing product. Pressure build vaporizers are needed to maintain the pressure and temperature inside the storage unit. For example, a product requirement with a maximum hourly vapor use rate of only 250 pounds would need a 9.15 kW electric pressure build vaporizer to maintain the temperature and pressure needed for most CO2 applications. Large volume liquid flow rates also require a pressure build vaporizer.

FIBA-TOMCO vacuum insulated CO2 storage units have the liquid supply and vapor return outlets arranged to allow installation of standard pressure build vaporizers. Other features of the FIBA-TOMCO unit are the waist high fill connections. This keeps the fill connections above most snow levels and is more convenient for the driver when filling the unit. Even with the high efficiency of vacuum insulated units, there are certain applications that require refrigeration to prevent product loss. When needed, we offer a modular external refrigeration system that does not require evaporator coils inside the storage unit. Additional liquid and vapor connections are standard on all units for installing this modular refrigeration system when required. FIBA-TOMCO units have stainless steel piping and ball valves. The shipping legs are also stainless steel on the 6, 14 & 30 ton vertical units.

All FIBA-TOMCO CO2 storage units have a capacity that is greater than the nominal capacity shown in our literature. Capacities are based on a liquid density of 63.65 Lb/FT3 (0°F) and a vapor density of 3.45 Lb/FT3. Our storage units are designed for seismic zone IV and for wind speeds of 110 mph.

Tomco has been a CO2 equipment manufacturer since 1970 and is the world leader in Carbon Dioxide storage and applications equipment. In joining forces with FIBA Technologies to manufacture vacuum insulated CO2 storage units, together we have more than 80+ years of experience in the industrial gas industry.
